Japanese machine-tool maker Mazak, together with the US Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has developed a hybrid metal additiveu2013subtractive manufacturing platform that will be publicly exhibited at the Emerging Technology Center at IMTS 2026.

The platform integrates a Fronius wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) system with two Mazak VC-Ez 20X five-axis vertical machining centers in one automated framework: WAAM deposits metal layer by layer from standard welding wire at high deposition rates, and the formed workpieces are then fed via an automated pallet-exchange system into the five-axis centers for 3+2 or full five-axis precision milling. Targeting high-mix, low-volume part production, it also covers structural repair, rapid tooling and near-net-shape manufacturing, handling workpieces up to about 700 mm in diameter and 400 kg. This layout matches the industry consensus — additive handles geometric freedom while CNC delivers precision and surface finish, and the two are converging as the mainstream line configuration for complex metal parts.
