What is DFM
What is Design for Manufacturing (DFM)?
DFM is the practice of bringing the manufacturing perspective into the design phase—ensuring parts are easy, reliable, and economical to manufacture without sacrificing functionality. The core logic: every individual dimension may pass inspection, yet parts can still fail once assembled—so risks must be identified and resolved before production starts.
Why DFM Matters
Early design decisions have the greatest cost impact. Revising a drawing costs almost nothing; revising a produced part costs real money. DFM catches problems at the CAD stage, before they surface during tooling, quoting, or machining—shortening lead times, lowering costs, and improving yields.
What a DFM Review Covers
A typical review evaluates wall thickness, tolerance strategy, datum consistency, process fit, material selection, surface finish, and how the prototype transitions to volume production. The output is an annotated report with clear, actionable revisions.
When to Conduct a DFM Review
- Before quoting a part, especially new prototypes.
- When tolerances are tight or cosmetic surfaces are involved.
- When transitioning from prototype to small-batch production.
- When choosing among CNC, casting, 3D printing, sheet metal, or hybrid process routes.
